Laser therapy, or “photobiomodulation,” is a chiropractic treatment using specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation, and decreased swelling. Laser therapy was FDA approved in 2002.
This painless treatment increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain.
How Long is a Laser Therapy Treatment Session?
Typically, the average course of treatment for each laser therapy session lasts between 5-10 minutes. However, this is dependent upon the size of the area being treated and the session will be adjusted accordingly.
How Many Laser Therapy Treatment Sessions Do I Need?
Acute conditions may require daily treatment, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. Chronic problems typically respond better when the treatments are received 2-3 times per week. However, with each patient, we determine their treatment plan on an individual basis.
What Does a Laser Therapy Treatment Feel Like?
Laser therapy treatments must be administered directly to the treated area, as laser light cannot penetrate through layers of clothing. However, we assure you that treatments are entirely painless and can even be relaxing! The only thing you may feel is a soothing warmth on the area in which the therapy is administered.
