5 Migraine Treatments

A migraine can strike when you least expect it with little or no notice. Have you experienced a migraine’s throbbing or pulsing pain accompanied by light or noise sensitivity? When taking migraine medicine, do you feel as though the relief cannot come quick enough? Before reaching for more medicine, you can try a few other things that could bring true relief! Below, we discuss the five most effective migraine treatments and how they help ease the severity and duration of most migraines.

5 Migraine Treatments

#1. Rest

There are multiple triggers that can result in a migraine. According to Mayo Clinic, migraine triggers can include hormonal changes, drinks, stress, sensory stimuli, sleep changes, physical factors (i.e. – intense physical exertion), weather changes, foods, medications, and food additives.

How many of these migraine triggers could be resolved with getting extra rest? To name a few benefits of proper sleep, adequate rest helps lower your stress cortisol levels and works on proper restoration and recovery after physical exertion. Therefore, sleeping with a migraine helps your body focus and eliminates distractions such as looking at your phone or laptop and seeing bright lights. Be sure to rest in alignment to prevent additional neck or back pain!

#2. Hydration

Dehydration is something that can quickly affect your body without your knowledge. According to the American Migraine Foundation, “about 1/3 of people with [a] migraine say dehydration is a trigger, and for some, even the slightest hint of dehydration can be the fast track to debilitating head pain.”

The next time you feel a migraine coming, try drinking water! With the suggested 2 liters of water per day, try maintaining proper hydration to lower the intensity and duration of your migraine. If you do this the moment you begin feeling head pressure or develop a sensitivity to light or sound, you may even be able to stop the migraine in its tracks.

#3. Heat or Ice Treatments

In terms of heat or ice, there are strategic placements for each when battling a migraine. Ice packs are known for numbing pain whereas heating pads can work to relax tightened or tense muscles.

Place an ice pack or cold, wet towel over your forehead and under your neck for no longer than fifteen-minute increments. To further help your body relax, place a heating pad on your lower back to prevent your spine from tensing up more.

#4. Laser Therapy

Do you know of a facility or practice near you that practices laser therapy? Approved by the FDA in 2002, laser therapy, or photobiomodulation, is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects, including:

  • Improved healing time
  • Pain reduction
  • Increased circulation
  • Decreased swelling
  • Reduced muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain

The gentle work of laser therapy can drastically reduce the pain of a migraine as it helps your body relax. If you have access to laser therapy at the start of your migraine, it’s worth the trip!

#5. Chiropractic Adjustments with Spinal Re-Engineering

Migraines can be debilitating. When prolonged, the unpredictability of migraines could force you to change plans entirely.

Did you know that migraines, although common, are not normal? Facing long-term migraines reveal the potential of other issues happening in your body if left untreated. However, chiropractic care and adjustments are a safe, cost-effective, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment for neck pain that treats the issue, not just the symptoms!

Spinal re-engineering is a chiropractic care technique that combines chiropractic and engineering principles, believing that if you correct the structure of your spine, you directly affect its function. This practice can help remedy many issues, including low back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, and others:

  • Decrease pain
  • Improve flexibility
  • Improve posture
  • Promote overall function
  • Increase range of motion
  • X-ray correction
  • Boost health and overall performance
  • Improve immune function
  • Decrease risk of injury
  • Correct the biomechanics of all joints in the body
